This would have been a lot more impressive if I hadn't recently seen Ready Or Not 2 (or, indeed, Ready Or Not 1) as the two films have a quite similar premise. In this, ex-convict Asia (Zazie Beetz) arrives late one night to start her new job as a live-in maid at The Virgil, an exclusive apartment building in New York, under her boss Lilith (Patricia Arquette).
After settling in, she is woken in the night by a group of masked figures in robes who attempt to kill, or at least incapacitate her. She unexpectedly fights back, killing all but one, only to discover that they return to life and are all immortal. It seems the residents of the building have signed a demonic pact and must make regular sacrifices to keep their immortality. Hence, the maid adverts.
Anyway, this is pretty good fun. Zazie Beetz is a formidable action heroine and the cultists - led by Heather Graham and Tom Felton among others are an entertaining bunch in themselves. It is a splatterfest with some good physical comedy and a few decent reversals thrown in before the even bloodier climax.
Arguably the better of the two similar films on release this year, but there is not much in it.
